Protest to Stop York Primate Research

🚨 PROTEST TO STOP YORK UNIVERSITY’S PRIMATE RESEARCH
📍 Meet at benches in front of Subway restaurant (no affiliation)
🕜 Monday, June 22nd | 3 PM – 5 PM
At 3 PM, we will gather at the benches in front of Subway before walking together to the protest location at/ by York University for a peaceful protest and friendly public outreach. It is easiest to find each other by arriving at the beginning, but if you arrive late please check back here in the discussion tab for location updates. Signs, banners, and leaflets will be provided. This protest will focus on outreach to raise awareness and sharing the call to action. If possible please avoid large, unrelated logos on clothing (such as brand names). Let’s be respectful to all and work together to help the animals.
We are coming together to raise awareness about the suffering of nine rhesus macaques currently being experimented on at York University… and to demand a future beyond animal testing.
A recent undercover investigation by Last Chance for Animals (LCA) exposed disturbing conditions inside York’s primate research lab. According to footage, records, and expert reviews released through the investigation, macaques were allegedly subjected to:
• Brain/head implants, some reportedly encrusted with blood
• Water deprivation used as a “motivational tool”
• Monkeys drinking their own urine due to dehydration
• Eye coils attached to the females’ eyes, resulting in blindness in one macaque after repeated surgeries
• Social isolation for years at a time
• Small barren cages causing severe psychological distress
• Repetitive trauma behaviors like pacing, swaying, hair-pulling, and self-harm
• Permanent restraint collars around their necks 24/7 , resulting in difficulties swallowing
• Multiple invasive surgeries over many years; some of the macaques have been there for 17+ years
One macaque, Kenny, was documented repeatedly scratching at his implant until he reportedly pulled it out, leaving a gaping wound.
Another macaque, Liesl, reportedly suffered significant vision loss after multiple eye procedures. Experts reviewing the evidence described the conditions as causing severe physical and psychological suffering.
This protest is not only about York University. It is about the future of science and ethics in Canada.
Around the world, there is increasing momentum toward phasing out animal testing in favour of modern, non-animal research methods. The United States and the European Union are already moving in this direction. Instead of defending outdated and cruel experiments on highly intelligent primates, Canada should be investing in humane and innovative science.
Join us to stand up for compassion, science without suffering, and a better future for both animals and humans.
📢 Please help spread the word by inviting friends and sharing this event.
