Call to Action: Stop the Cruel Export of Canadian Horses for Slaughter

Every year, thousands of gentle, intelligent horses are forced into cramped wooden crates and flown halfway across the world from Canada to Japan. Terrified and confused, they endure long, grueling flights—only to be slaughtered shortly upon arrival for raw horse meat (sashimi). This brutal industry causes terrible suffering, and it has to stop.

On August 14th, Animal Justice is launching a nationwide campaign for animal defenders to reach out to their MPs about ending Canada’s live horse exports. We need you—your heart and voice—to end this brutal practice once and for all.

This fall, the Liberal government will introduce a new budget bill, which can include non-budgetary measures like a ban on live horse exports. Liberal MPs will also gather at an upcoming party retreat. These are key moments to push for change!

Join Animal Justice and fellow advocates on August 14 for a national day of reaching out to MPs to speak up for horses.

What To Do:

1. Mark August 14 right now on your calendar to phone your MP’s office and request a meeting.
2. Determine who your MP is. With just your postal code, you can look them up and find their contact information here: https://www.ourcommons.ca/members/en
3. If you’d be interested in having a member of the AJA team attend the meeting with you for support, please email us before reaching out to your MP at academy@animaljustice.ca
4. Call your MP’s constituency office. You’ll likely get their voicemail, or their staff may answer the phone. Tell them:
● Your name
● That you are a constituent (not a member of Animal Justice)
● You’d like to meet with your MP or a member of the team about supporting a ban on live horse exports in advance of the fall budget bill
5. Ideally, they’ll schedule a meeting on the spot, or they’ll return your call to set one up. If you leave them a voicemail, send a follow-up email to their constituency office, reiterating your request.
