SUMMARY:EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION WORKSHOP
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will provide an introduction to Nonviolent Communication (NVC) for animal advocates. NVC is a communication modality based on principles of Nonviolence\, a philosophy that seeks to find a third way beyond the binary of pacifism and violence. NVC seeks solutions to conflicts that\, through awareness of the needs of all parties\, lead towards healing and reconciliation for all. \nThis highly interactive workshop will cover the basic vocabulary of NVC- observations\, feelings\, needs\, and requests\, and include exercises to begin (or continue) your practice. We’ll discuss using NVC across power differentials and in some common conflicts internal to the animal rights movement. \nSecure your spot & register now for free: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1115681105219 \nTo avoid time discrepancies\, confirm the time here: https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?msg=Communication+Workshop&iso=20250128T19&p1=250&ah=2 \nAbout the Facilitator: \nEva Hamer is a co-founder of Pax Fauna\, an organization committed to revitalizing the grassroots animal rights movement in the US through original research on messaging\, strategy\, and culture. Building on a background in Kingian nonviolence\, Eva Hamer has been engaging in intensive study of Nonviolent communication for several years\, and she is committed to bringing NVC’s repertoire of creative problem-solving tools to the work of building a stronger culture in the animal movement. \nEva has been organizing in the animal freedom movement since 2015 when she started working with DxE in Chicago\, where she focused on building community\, writing protest music\, and compiling the movements’ songs into an online songbook used by advocates around the world. From 2018-2021\, she worked full-time for DxE\, managing the organization’s many legal cases\, organizing trainings\, and orchestrating large artistic demonstrations. Eva has a deep curiosity about the internal cultural dynamics of social movements and their ability to influence dominant culture. \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:Movie Night at the Lab - The Land of Ahimsa
DESCRIPTION:Movie Night at the Lab! Wishbone Animal Rights Lab and We The Free are teaming up once again\, this time to bring you “The Land of Ahimsa”. Invite your non-vegan friends\, family\, and co-workers! \nThe concept of Ahimsa — or respect for all living things and avoidance of violence towards others — is an age-old concept espoused by many religions. But now with our society’s full knowledge of animal exploitation and the atrocities happening in\, for example\, the dairy and leather industries\, can we still call India ‘the land of Ahimsa’? \nThis thought-provoking feature-length documentary brings us the story of Dolly Vyas-Ahuja’s journey to veganism and explores the notion of the people of India returning to their roots and living their peaceful values. \nThe filmmakers hope that “The Land of Ahimsa” will encourage Indians\, as well as viewers all around the world\, to practise “Ahimsa”…and for them to persuade others to do the same. \nWe also have a special treat…one of the editors of the film\, Ray Kowalchuk\, will be in-theatre to introduce the film and be available for a Q&A at the movie’s completion. \nThe Lab is a default-vegan space\, so all outside food must be plant-based. Animal-friendly snacks are available at the concession stand. Vish\, our little plushie Ambassador of Anti-Speciesism\, gets LOTS to eat\, so don’t let him fool you when he asks for some of your popcorn! \nFYI: The Lab is located within a heritage building boasting one of the last attendant-operated elevators in the city of Toronto. Unfortunately for this particular event\, we are unable to accommodate anyone requiring a lift to the 3rd floor. We are working on remedying this situation for future events held at Wishbone. \nNotes: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:Court Hearing: Vegan Human Rights Case
DESCRIPTION:Join Animal Justice inside the courthouse to watch this hearing live and support this important case for vegan rights! \nAnimal Justice has been granted leave to intervene at the Divisional Court of Ontario in a groundbreaking discrimination case brought by vegan firefighter\, Adam Knauff. This case raises the novel question of whether a belief in ethical veganism is a type of “creed”\, a protected ground under the Ontario Human Rights Code. \nIn 2023\, the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario denied Mr. Knauff’s claim that his belief system as an ethical vegan counted as a creed. Now\, Mr. Knauff seeks judicial review of that decision from the Court. An Animal Justice lawyer will argue that ethical veganism as a secular belief system meets all the requirements to be protected as a creed. \nLocation: Courtroom 3\, Osgoode Hall \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:AR Chats @ Wishbone – Saturday February 8th
DESCRIPTION:Date selection and planning begins for the 2025 TORONTO ANIMAL RIGHTS MARCH! Anyone interested in volunteering as an organizer\, we look forward to seeing you! \nNew year\, new resolve\, new strategies.\nJoin with other like-minded and like-hearted people to chat\, brainstorm\, and strategize about standing up for the animals!\nOn the agenda: Along with general discussion about getting animal-active and business by FurFree Toronto\, date selection and planning begins for the 2025 Toronto Animal Rights March! \nA few details about AR Chats @Wishbone:\nWhether you’re a seasoned advocate or someone new to the scene\, this is a judgment-free\, no-pressure environment that welcomes every idea and supports every comfort level. Because each person is uniquely wired and different tactics resonate with different people\, there’s no one foolproof form of activism. \nAfter each session\, attendees are encouraged to participate in a street action to put your new skills and energy into practice (this is totally voluntary\, no pressure).\nSome attend one week\, but can’t come to the next one…just attend when you can.\nPlease feel free to bring a plant-based food item to share.\nLet’s return Toronto and other cities in Ontario to the thriving\, prolific animal activism centres they once were! \nAs the building that houses Wishbone is a heritage building boasting one of the last attendant-operated elevators in the city of Toronto (but only during weekday office hours)\, Wishbone will unfortunately not be accessible to anyone requiring a lift to the third floor. Our apologies in advance for this inconvenience.\nWishbone Animal Rights Lab…where vegan is the default\, NOT the option. \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:What the Studies Say About Animal vs Plant-Based Meat
DESCRIPTION:FOR OUR NEXT AJA LUNCHTIME LIVE on FEB. 13… \nREGISTER (free): https://training.animaljusticeacademy.com/lunchtime-live-registration-02132025 \nYou’ll probably recall how Beyond Burger and Impossible Meat entered the scene a few years ago to great fanfare… Folks were thrilled to have a tasty alternative to animal meat that was healthier\, more environmental\, and cruelty-free. \nShortly after\, however\, the animal agriculture industry started a massive campaign to discredit these competing plant-based products by positioning them as “ultra-processed”\, “unnatural”\, and “unhealthy”. \nOn this AJA Lunchtime Live\, we have Dr. Matthew Nagra\, ND joining us to set the record straight! \nHe was the lead researcher of a meta-analysis published in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology that looked at studies from 1970 to 2023 comparing plant-based and animal-based meats. \nHe’ll give us the Coles Notes on this large-scale review that shows plant-based meat alternatives — even the so-called “ultra-processed” products — as the more heart-healthy option. \nThe findings report how plant-based meats better support reductions in weight and cholesterol and supply more dietary fibre. Also\, how they’re not only better for the planet\, they’re better for the body. \nIn this session\, Matthew will give us tips on how to use this information to effectively to dispel the meat industry’s harmful myths about plant-based meats. \nThursday\, February 13\n12:00-1:00pm ET on ZOOM

SUMMARY:Movie Night at the Lab: The Invisible Vegan
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a vegan celebration of Black History Month with a movie night screening of The Invisible Vegan. \nThe Invisible Vegan is a 90-minute independent documentary that explores the problem of unhealthy dietary patterns in the African-American community\, foregrounding the health and wellness possibilities enabled by plant-based vegan diets and lifestyle choices. Featuring interviews with luminaries such as Cedric the Entertainer (actor and comedian)\, John Salley (former NBA player and wellness advocate)\, and Clayton Gavin (aka Stic of the hip-hop duo Dead Prez)\, this documentary shows how intertwined histories of slavery\, twentieth-century socioeconomic inequalities\, and the rise of Big Food\, have led to the increased consumption and dependence on meat\, processed\, junk\, and fast food. \nInspired by Ralph Ellison’s 1952 firsthand account of alienation as an African-American in The Invisible Man\, the title of this documentary evokes the ways in which prevailing attitudes and stereotypes about veganism within the African-American community have rendered the benefits of this lifestyle invisible within spheres of popular culture\, social experience\, and political debate. \nThere will be a “concession stand” but feel free to bring your own plant-based snacks & drinks. This is another opportunity to connect with the Toronto animal rights community.\nBring a snack\, invite a friend.\nEveryone is welcome! \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:Compassion Fatigue?
DESCRIPTION:It’s such a tragic irony we see over and over again with animal advocates… \nYou get drawn into working with animals because you have such a tender and caring heart\, and then that heart ends up getting PUMMELLED by constantly having a front-row seat to the worst abuses of animals imaginable. 🙁 \nEmpathy overload happens when you’re constantly exposed to the suffering of others without enough resources to properly process this. Compassion fatigue is the depletion of feeling and caring capacity because of empathy overload…and it’s taking way too many animal advocates down. \nIn this active Animal Justice Academy Lunchtime Live workshop on Thursday\, March 13\, AJA Director and coach for changemakers Kimberly Carroll will take us through three ways to deal with empathy overload and compassion fatigue: \n1. Better boundaries to provide some sanctuary from the constant onslaught of painful situations and stimulus \n2. Simple\, tangible techniques to regularly process emotional pain \n3. A short daily routine to build up your inner resilience \nDuring this online gathering\, we won’t just talk about these strategies\, we’ll test-drive them in our time together\, so you can come out of this session feeling some relief and having \npowerful new tools to put to use. \nABOUT KIMBERLY: As a coach for changemakers\, Kimberly helps activists\, non-profit folks\, and mission-inspired leaders and entrepreneurs build the inner resilience and outer strategies to change the world while not losing themselves in the process. \nREGISTER FREE: https://training.animaljusticeacademy.com/lunchtime-live-registration-03132025

DESCRIPTION:Saturday March 15\, 2025 from 11:30am – 1:30pm \nDate selection and planning begins for the 2025 TORONTO ANIMAL RIGHTS MARCH! SUMMARY:Preliminary Court Appearance - Farm Building Protest
DESCRIPTION:Jenny McQueen is facing criminal charges for attempting to protest the inside the Farm building at the Canadian National Exhibition – aka CNE’s “the ex”. \nThis court date\, in room #202 at 10 Armoury Street in Toronto\, is merely a brief appearance to set future dates. Sketch artist David Louis Wall is following this case\, and will be in court sketching those in attendance. \nThe defense lawyer or their representative will likely be attending via zoom. \nMcQueen says “At a time when animal rights activists are releasing footage from inside disgusting farms\, and even inside gas chambers where pigs are lowered\, screaming for their lives\, the pampered mother pig at the CNE\, and the other live animals\, resting on hay with their cute babies around them is completely deceiving the visiting public.” \nJenny was with a group of individuals who had all bought tickets to visit the CNE on 18th August 2024. She was the only one arrested. \nPetition to end live animal displays at the CNE: https://www.change.org/CNE-Farm-Lies \n#CNEFarmTrial
