SUMMARY:Animal Justice Online Panel: A Bold Plan for Farmed Animal Protection in Canada
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW: https://action.animaljustice.ca/page/191364/petition/1 \nMost Canadians would be shocked to find out that there are effectively no laws to prevent the suffering of the hundreds of millions of animals on farms in this country. \nThat’s because the government has allowed the industry-dominated National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC) to call the shots. Instead of real laws\, NFACC sets weak\, voluntary guidelines with no meaningful oversight or transparency and little enforcement even when extreme abuse occurs. \nThe result is a system that’s fallen shockingly behind global welfare norms\, normalizing extreme confinement\, mutilations without pain relief\, and brutal on-farm killing. \nBut now a coalition of four leading animal protection organizations—Animal Justice\, Humane World for Animals\, Mercy For Animals\, and the Montreal SPCA—has developed a national plan that could transform Canada for farmed animals. \nIn this Animal Justice panel\, we’ll break down the new joint report Towards a National Framework for Farmed Animal Protection—and the roadmap it lays out for enforceable standards\, independent oversight\, and real accountability. \nOur panelists:\n-Dr. Tayler Zavitz: Advocacy Programs Specialist – Animal Justice\n-Riana Topan: Program Director\, Farmed Animal Welfare and Protection – Humane World for Animals Canada\n-Maha Bazzi: Director of Animal Welfare Initiatives – Mercy For Animals\n-Sayara Thurston: Senior Policy Advisor for Farmed Animals – Montreal SPCA\n-Alanna Devine: Director of Advocacy – Animal Justice\nHosted by: Animal Justice’s Kimberly Carroll \nWe’ll discuss:\n-How industry self-regulation became the default—and how badly it fails animals.\n-The concrete reforms proposed in the report\, and what it will take to turn them into law.\n-Establishing a federal Animal Welfare Act and a Ministry of Animal Welfare.\n-The outsized industry influence and institutional conflicts of interest that have kept meaningful protections stalled.\n-How you can help get this plan seen—and help build the public and political will to make it law. \nRegister now to secure your spot! https://action.animaljustice.ca/page/191364/petition/1

SUMMARY:Protest York University's Experiments on Primates
DESCRIPTION:🚨 PROTEST YORK UNIVERSITY’S PRIMATE EXPERIMENTS 🚨 \n📍 Meet at: Aroma Espresso Bar\n🕜 Friday\, May 15 | 1:30 PM – 3:30 PM \nAt 1:30 PM\, we will gather at Aroma Espresso Bar before walking together to the protest location at York University for a peaceful demonstration and friendly public outreach. If you arrive late\, check back here in the discussion tab for the exact location which will be updated at that time. Signs\, banners\, and leaflets will be provided. Avoid logos on clothing. Let’s be respectful to all and work together to help the animals. \nWe are coming together to raise awareness about the suffering of nine rhesus macaques currently being experimented on at York University… and to demand a future beyond animal testing. \nA recent undercover investigation by Last Chance for Animals (LCA) exposed disturbing conditions inside York’s primate research lab. \nAccording to footage\, records\, and expert reviews released through the investigation\, macaques were allegedly subjected to:\n• Brain/head implants\, some reportedly encrusted with blood\n• Water deprivation used as a “motivational tool”\n• Social isolation for years at a time\n• Small barren cages causing severe psychological distress\n• Repetitive trauma behaviors like pacing\, swaying\, hair-pulling\, and self-harm\n• Permanent restraint collars around their necks\n• Multiple invasive surgeries over many years\n• Monkeys reportedly drinking their own urine due to dehydration \nOne macaque\, Kenny\, was documented repeatedly scratching at his implant until he reportedly pulled it out\, leaving a gaping wound. Another macaque\, Liesl\, reportedly suffered significant vision loss after multiple eye procedures. Experts reviewing the evidence described the conditions as causing severe physical and psychological suffering. \nThis protest is not only about York University. It is about the future of science and ethics in Canada. \nAround the world\, there is increasing momentum toward phasing out animal testing in favour of modern\, non-animal research methods. The United States and parts of Europe are already moving in this direction. Instead of defending outdated and cruel experiments on highly intelligent primates\, Canada should be investing in humane and innovative science. \nJoin us to stand up for compassion\, science without suffering\, and a better future for both animals and humans. \n📢 Please help spread the word by inviting friends and sharing this event.\n⬇️ LEARN MORE / WATCH THE INVESTIGATION / TAKE ACTION:\nhttps://stopyorkprimateresearch.com/

SUMMARY:From Bath to Bay Street: The Art of Philip McCulloch-Downs
DESCRIPTION:We feel honoured to become caretakers of this powerful collection — of each individual piece — gifted to us by animal rights artivist\, the deeply talented and compassionate\, Philip McCulloch-Downs: The entirety of his early animal rights collection\, lovingly created between 2014 and 2019\, and now entrusted to us here in Toronto. \nWe will be showing selected pieces for this particular exhibit. \nWe want to thank him\, as well\, for going so far above and beyond — organizing\, documenting\, carefully transporting this collection by bus from his little corner of the world in Bath\, England\, all the way to Heathrow Airport\, and releasing it from his flame-red-haired self into the hands of another flame-red-haired person\, the wonderful Robin Waldman\, who carried this precious cargo across the ocean to us here in Toronto: 3\,475 miles/5\,593 kilometres away! \nIt was almost like we were staging an international art heist with all of the preparation that went into this venture\, down to the most minute detail of anything and everything that “could” happen/go wrong. But we pulled it off — and\, frankly\, the romantic undertaking of smuggling a tiny revolution across the Atlantic in a carry-on bag warranted that kind of effort. \nThese works carry years of pensive thought\, grief\, agony\, empathy\, fury\, tenderness\, and hope. Philip didn’t just send paintings — he sent pieces of his heart. \nThank you\, Philip

SUMMARY:MFA | Unilever Unmasked Protest
DESCRIPTION:Join Mercy For Animals at Unilever\,160 Bloor St E\, Toronto\, ON M4W 1B9. \nA global consumer goods company\, has faced backlash for dropping their 2025 goal of sourcing 100% cage-free eggs worldwide\, maintaining commitments only in Western markets while leaving millions of hens in cages elsewhere. Despite reaching 68% globally\, this move raises concerns about prioritizing profit over animal welfare. \nWe launched a campaign with OWA on Feb 3 to push Unilever to restore its global cage-free commitment and publish a clear\, actionable plan. \nDue to their lack of action\, we are planning a protest at Unilever’s Canadian offices on May 21\, 4:30pm – 6:30pm during AVA Toronto.\nWe will have a banner\, signs\, and leaflets to use the day of. Come with yourself and bonus if you can bring a friend! \nBy attending this and other Mercy For Animals events\, you agree to our Volunteer Terms (https://mercyforanimals.org/volunteer-terms/) and Volunteer Handbook (https://file-cdn.mercyforanimals.org/…/MFA-Volunteer…). \nIf you have any questions feel free to message me on Facebook or by email at animalsmatter@hotmail.com. \nThank you\,\nKelli Demontneay

SUMMARY:Documentary Screenings: "AI & Animals" and SEAntience
DESCRIPTION:After enjoying a final day at the AVA Summit — and/or hopefully taking part in the Toronto Animal Rights March — you’re warmly invited to join us at The Lab | Vegutainment Centre (just a 7-minute stroll from the Sheraton)\, the public-facing extension of the Wishbone Animal Rights Lab family\, for a screening of two powerful short documentaries produced by Animal Ethics. \nWe’re pleased to welcome Aditya Karanam\, Animal Ethics’ Outreach Coordinator in Asia\, who will introduce the films and take your questions. He will also be presenting at the conference on May 22nd\, so be sure to catch his talks! \nThe evening features “AI & Animals: A Documentary”\, which explores the potential impacts of AI on non-human animals and how advocates can act proactively\, and “SEAntience”\, which delves into the sentience of marine beings through insights from leading voices around the globe in science and philosophy. \nTogether\, these films invite us to reflect not only on the future we are shaping\, but on who is included within it — shining a light on the often-overlooked lives of non-human animals. \nBy bridging science\, philosophy\, and advocacy\, they deepen our understanding of sentience\, responsibility\, and the far-reaching consequences of human innovation. They remind us that progress is not neutral — it carries the power either to perpetuate harm or to foster compassion on a global scale. \nBut most importantly\, they encourage us to recognize and respect the lives of all sentient beings. \nAfter the screenings\, you’re very welcome to stay for music\, decompression\, and connection as we wind down together and bid one another a fond farewell — until next year\, of course. 🙂
