SUMMARY:Rethinking the Menu: Mobilizing Cities for Climate-Safe and Plant-Based Food Systems
DESCRIPTION:🗓️ June 3 \n⏰ 6:00pm-7:30pm \n📍 Wishbone Animal Rights Lab\, Suite 305 \n600 Bay Street \n💲 Cost: Free \n  \nCities have a critical opportunity to lead on climate action through food. \n  \nFive cities in southern Ontario have endorsed the Plant Based Treaty to date. This panel explores our partnerships with cities to promote plant-based food policies and greening the city: \n  \n– Richmond Hill – including sharing recipes\, vendors and films to promote plant-based food and introducing plant-based pancakes at Maple Syrup festival; \n  \n– Brampton – now has plant based options at events and plant based food awareness week during Earth Month; \n  \n– Caledon – we do food demos (including making hyper nourishing green smoothies) for the mayor and city councillor and public for Earth Hour\, Earth Day and Waste Reduction days. \n  \n– Shifting to plant-based food menus across public institutions\, workplaces\, and communities can lower greenhouse gas emissions\, reduce land and water use\, improve public health\, and increase access to affordable food options. \n  \nThis session focuses on action\, including how to advocate for policy change and scale impact. Attendees will leave with clear next steps to become part of a campaign and help bring more cities on board as part of a growing global movement for plant-based food systems. \n  \nAbout the Host: \nThe Plant Based Treaty is a global initiative that encourages governments\, institutions\, and individuals to shift toward plant-based food systems to address climate change\, biodiversity loss\, and food insecurity. It works through policy advocacy\, public information campaigns\, and partnerships to support a transition away from animal agriculture toward sustainable\, plant-based solutions. \n  \nRegister here: \nhttps://luma.com/n3gb3r6d \n  \nOrganizer’s website: \n🌱 https://plantbasedtreaty.org/ \n  \n🐾 Attention: \n⚠️ Animal-free foods only.

SUMMARY:Mobilizing Against Live Exports: Part 2
DESCRIPTION:It’s working. \nThanks to supporters across Canada\, the movement to end live horse exports for slaughter is gaining real political traction and MPs are feeling it. \nHere’s what’s already been achieved together:\n-167 people have requested meetings with their MPs\n-42 meetings have been scheduled or have already taken place\n-41 paper petitions have been launched\n-MPs have told us this is now one of the top issues they’re hearing about from constituents\n-11 MPs have agreed to present petitions in the House of Commons calling for a ban via regulations\n-10 MPs have committed to raising the issue directly with the Prime Minister\, the Minister of Agriculture\, or in Parliament\n-On March 24\, Senator Adler raised a question of live horse exports in the Senate \nThis issue is moving through the political system in a way we haven’t seen before. \nBut we are not done yet. \nTo turn this momentum into a ban on this cruel practice\, we need to grow public pressure and keep increasing the number of Canadians engaging their MPs. \nHere’s How to Join Us: \n1. Email your MP’s constituency office to request a meeting to ask that they help ban live horse exports by raising the issue with the Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister\, requesting that they ban the practice by amending the Health of Animals Regulations. You can find your MP’s contact information HERE: https://www.ourcommons.ca/members/en\n2. Add your name to our tracking form HERE: https://docs.google.com/…/1FAIpQLSdb2bvsLBM…/viewform… \nEmail Script (Feel free to adapt in your own words): \n“Hello\, my name is [NAME]\, and I’m a constituent of [NAME OF MP]. I’m writing to request a meeting with [MP’S NAME] regarding live horse exports for slaughter. This is an important animal welfare issue to me\, and I would appreciate the opportunity to meet in person or by Zoom to discuss having [NAME OF MP] raise the issue with the Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister and request that they ban it by amending the Health of Animals Regulations. Could someone please get back to me about scheduling? Thank you.” \nYou can consult our Action Brief for further details.\nhttps://docs.google.com/…/1klJagihzoC5j4OgcBQOP…/edit… \nSo what are you waiting for? RSVP\, send your email and then update our tracking form! SUMMARY:National Day of Action to End Live Horse Exports
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, we rallied across Canada to ban the cruel export of horses for slaughter. Dozens of MPs were contacted by phone and email\, and many had meetings with constituents about the issue. 50+ advocates gathered in Edmonton to demand change! \n📞 On Oct 1\, we need you again. Call your MP & urge them to support a federal ban on live horse exports. If you’ve already taken this action\, please share any updates with us or call again if you haven’t yet had a meeting! \nEvery year\, thousands of gentle\, intelligent horses are forced into cramped wooden crates and flown halfway across the world from Canada to Japan. Terrified and confused\, they endure long\, grueling flights—only to be fattened and then slaughtered for raw horse meat (sashimi). \nThis fall\, the Liberal government will introduce a new budget bill\, which can include non-budgetary measures like a ban on live horse exports. This is a key moment to push for change! \nWe need you—your heart and voice—to end this cruel and completely unnecessary practice once and for all. \n1st LEVEL ACTION:\nPHONE your MP’s constituency office (find your MP and contact details here: https://www.ourcommons.ca/members/en?)\nYou’ll likely get their voicemail or a staff member. Tell them:\n● Your name\n● That you’re a constituent (NOT a member of Animal Justice)\n● You’re calling because you’d like to see if your MP will support passing a ban on live horse exports in the fall Parliamentary session.\n● If they’re a Liberal MP\, ask if they’d be willing to work to include the ban on live horse exports in the fall budget bill.\n● That’s all you need to say\, but if you’d like to say more\, we provide some additional talking points in this Action Brief \n2nd LEVEL ACTION:\nFor those who want to take one of the most powerful steps you can for the horses…\nWhen you phone\, ask for a MEETING with your MP or a member of their team about supporting a ban on live horse exports in advance of the fall budget bill.\nUse the Action Brief we created for you with step-by-step instructions on scheduling\, preparing for\, and navigating your meeting\nYou even have the option of having a member of the AJ team attend the meeting with you if you book it via Zoom!\n—–\nMake sure to mark GOING to let us know you made or are making that call on October 1st. And check back here on that date to get inspired by other AJAer’s experiences\, get moral support from the team\, and share your own experience of reaching out.\nTogether\, let’s make October 1st a turning point for horses in Canada.

SUMMARY:RALLY: Animal Justice in Court to Block Return of Ag Gag Law
DESCRIPTION:Ontario’s dangerous ag gag law—which punishes whistleblowers and hides animal abuse— is back in court. After a judge struck down much of the law as unconstitutional last year\, the province filed an appeal in an attempt to overturn our hard-fought legal victory. Join Animal Justice and friends for a powerful rally outside the Ontario Court of Appeal as we return to the courtroom to defend the ruling. \nThe appeal will be heard by the Ontario Court of Appeal on Tuesday\, June 24 & Wednesday\, June 25. We need you there to show the court—and the public—that Canadians won’t accept laws that cover up cruelty and silence the truth about abuse at farms and slaughterhouses. Join us in an eye-catching rally\,  and help us spread the message that ag gag laws have NO place in Canada! \nSigns will be provided\, and you are welcome to bring your own. Bring your friends\, family\, and fellow advocates! \nNote: Please check the Faceboook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:CANADA ABUSES ANIMALS - 2nd Annual Parliament Protest!
DESCRIPTION:Hello Canadian animal rights activists! \nThe time has come! We are planning the second year of our annual event in Ottawa: Canada Abuses Animals! \nThe purpose of this event and protest is to shine a light on all of the legal animal abuse that is still prevalent across this country in a variety of industries. \nThis demonstration is not intended to be anti-patriotic. We love this country and we want it to be the best it can be! But a country that partakes in systemic animal abuse can never be at its best\, and Canadians are fundamentally against animal abuse. \nWe will meet at Major’s Hill\, get organized\, march for 1 hour and then have an event on Parliament Hill itself. \nPlease note: PROTESTS ON PARLIAMENT HILL ARE NOT LIKE OTHER PROTESTS. They can attract more attention\, both from the government and from the media\, which is great. But they also need a permit (which we have!) and that permit comes with rules and regulations. \nEVERYONE PLANNING TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS EVENT\, please read and abide by this Parliament Hill rulebook: http://hill-colline.parl.ca/pdf/CUPH-Rules-e.pdf\nFrançais : http://hill-colline.parl.ca/pdf/CUPH-Rules-f.pdf \nIf you bring something that is not approved in the rules\, we may be asked to leave. \nCoolers are allowed in case you want to pack a lunch. Personal tents\, tables or chairs are unfortunately NOT permitted. \nALL SIGNS MUST HAVE MESSAGES THAT ARE ‘ON THEME’\, such as:\nAll animal abuse should be illegal\nAnimal exploitation is animal abuse\nAnimal mutilation is animal abuse\nTransporting live animals is animal abuse\nGestation cages are animal abuse\nCanada Funds Animal Abuse\nAnimal gas chamber is animal abuse\nElectrocuting animals is animal abuse\nLack of medical care on farms is animal abuse\nAnimal testing is animal abuse\nForced fertilization of animals is animal abuse\nThe dairy industry is animal abuse\nThe meat industry is animal abuse\nThe egg industry is animal abuse\nThe fur industry is animal abuse\nMacerating chicks is animal abuse\nCanada CAN and MUST do better for animals\nCanadians are AGAINST animal abuse\nBe a voice for animals\nAnimal agriculture is animal abuse\nAnimals deserve a bill of rights \nIf you are unsure if your sign matches the event theme\, please check with us! \nI would like people to speak or perform at this event! If you would like to be considered to give a speech or musical performance\, or if you are in contact with a known person who may wish to do so\, please contact us. \nThe dress code for this event is a WHITE top. We will be selling Canada Abuses Animals t-shirts and crewneck sweatshirts this year! \nWe will be renting a bus from Montreal to Ottawa as we did last year\, but carpooling will also be essential to get people there\, so if you have a car with room for compassionate humans\, please say so in the discussion below! \nThe idea is that this event is something we can repeat year after year until animal abuse is no longer part of Canadian culture. I would also like to see it reproduced in other countries one day! (Australia Abuses Animals\, France Abuses Animals\, etc.) \nLet’s make this BIG and MEMORABLE and remind Canadians that they are forgetting their better natures and who they really are by consuming products from industries that abuse animals on their behalf. \nIf you have any other ideas that you think would make this event more effective\, please send us a message. \nThank you so much and see you there! \nMerci beaucoup. On se voit là-bas! \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Call to Action - Email to NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR Members of Parliament
DESCRIPTION:***Each week\, a different province or territory will be the focus of our call to action. \nRecently\, bills C-47 and S-5 became law. The parts of these two bills pertaining to animal testing will prevent millions of lives from being bred into an existence of exploitation. With the passing of these two bills\, Canada has become a leader in the fight against vivisection\, which we hope will lead down the path toward a total ban on animal testing across all industries. \nEach year\, millions of animals are used and tortured in post-secondary institutions around the world and according to new research commissioned by the Animal Alliance of Canada Fund (AAC Fund)\, 8 in 10 Canadians want post-secondary institutions to stop using animals for educational purposes\, research\, and testing.\nIn 2021\, University of Toronto alone used 159\,803 animals from 161 species. \nIt would be in the best interest of post-secondary institutions across the country to heed these findings and move toward transitioning to non-animal research methods. \nPlease take a few seconds to send a pre-written email to all Newfoundland & Labrador Members of Parliament\, asking them to build on the momentum of passing bills C-47 and S-5 and introduce a new bill that will ban all post-secondary institutions from using animals for educational purposes\, research\, and testing. All executives in the animal research department at University of Toronto will be bcc’d on the email. \nhttps://tinyurl.com/MP-Newfoundland-Labrador \nThank you.
