DESCRIPTION:🚨 PROTEST & FRIENDLY OUTREACH TO STOP YORK UNIVERSITY’S PRIMATE RESEARCH\n📍 NEW MEETING SPOT: TTC York University subway station entrances; 120 Ian Macdonald Boulevard (where we normally do outreach).\n🕜 Monday\, August 31st | 12PM – 2PM \nSigns\, banners\, and leaflets will be provided. A media truck will also be around for part of this protest playing video footage of the investigation\, and we can take photos beside it. Note that washrooms are not available at the location. We recommend a washroom break beforehand at one of the restaurants nearby at our previous meeting spot (105 The Pond Rd.). Meeting at the outreach location will allow us to get started right away as people arrive. \nThis protest will focus on outreach to raise awareness and sharing the call to action. If possible please avoid large\, unrelated logos on clothing (such as brand names). Let’s be respectful to all and work together to help the animals. \nWe are coming together to raise awareness about the suffering of nine rhesus macaques currently being experimented on at York University… and to demand a future beyond animal testing. \nA recent undercover investigation by Last Chance for Animals (LCA) exposed disturbing conditions inside York’s primate research lab. According to footage\, records\, and expert reviews released through the investigation\, macaques were allegedly subjected to: \n• Brain/head implants\, some reportedly encrusted with blood\n• Water deprivation used as a “motivational tool”\n• Monkeys drinking their own urine due to dehydration\n• Eye coils attached to the females’ eyes\, resulting in blindness in one macaque after repeated surgeries\n• Social isolation for years at a time\n• Small barren cages causing severe psychological distress\n• Repetitive trauma behaviors like pacing\, swaying\, hair-pulling\, and self-harm\n• Permanent restraint collars around their necks 24/7 \, resulting in difficulties swallowing\n• Multiple invasive surgeries over many years; some of the macaques have been there for 17+ years \nOne macaque\, Kenny\, was documented repeatedly scratching at his implant until he reportedly pulled it out\, leaving a gaping wound. Another macaque\, Liesl\, reportedly suffered significant vision loss after multiple eye procedures. Experts reviewing the evidence described the conditions as causing severe physical and psychological suffering. \nThis protest is not only about York University. It is about the future of science and ethics in Canada. Around the world\, there is increasing momentum toward phasing out animal testing in favour of modern\, non-animal research methods. The United States and the European Union are already moving in this direction. DESCRIPTION:🚨 BACK TO SCHOOL PROTEST & OUTREACH: HELP SAVE THE YORK 9\n📍 TTC York University subway station entrances\n120 Ian Macdonald Boulevard\, York University\n🕐 September 18th 3-5pm \nStudents are back\, and we’re coming back bigger. \nJoin Toronto animal rights activists and Last Chance for Animals for a major back-to-school protest and outreach event calling for an end to primate experimentation at York University and freedom for the York 9. \nThousands of students will be returning to campus\, giving us an important opportunity to reach people who may have no idea that macaques are being experimented on at their own university. \nWe’ll have:\n• Speakers sharing what is happening inside York’s primate labs\n• A media truck playing footage from LCA’s undercover investigation\n• Two video stations at the subway entrances where students can watch investigation footage\n• New signage\n• QR-code action stations so students can take action immediately\n• FREE Save the York 9 T-shirts and tote bags while supplies last\n• Plenty of opportunities to help with friendly student outreach \nMaterials are provided. Just show up and help us make the York 9 impossible to ignore as students return to campus. \n🐒 WHY WE’RE THERE\nNine rhesus macaques are currently being used in experiments at York University. Some have reportedly spent more than 17 years inside the laboratory. \nAn undercover investigation by Last Chance for Animals (LCA) documented disturbing conditions and procedures\, including water restriction\, permanent restraint collars\, permanent head posts and chamber implants in their skulls for brain access\, repeated invasive surgeries\, prolonged social isolation and stereotypic behaviours associated with psychological distress. According to the investigation\, some macaques were observed drinking their own urine amid water restriction\, while one\, Liesl\, has suffered significant vision loss. Seven of the nine were reportedly housed alone. \nThese nine individuals have names: Bento\, Hannah\, Kenny\, Liesl\, Magneto\, Mini-Sass\, Do\, Olivia\, and Virginia.\nWe want the York 9 released so they can finally retire from research. \nBut this campaign is about more than nine macaques. \n🔬 OLD SCIENCE → NEW SCIENCE\nWe are also calling for a transition away from animal experimentation and toward modern\, human-relevant New Approach Methodologies (NAMs). \nInstead of continuing invasive experiments on primates\, we want to see Canada invest in innovative non-animal science and educate the next generation of researchers in methods that don’t depend on harming animals. \nBack-to-school is our opportunity to make sure York students know what’s happening on their campus\, and know that they have the power to help change it. \nPlease keep outreach friendly and respectful. If possible\, avoid clothing with unrelated logos or messaging so that our campaign visuals remain clear and unified. We also ask everyone to please follow directions from event organizers and stick to the plans established for the day. Ideas and suggestions are always welcome\, but some activities\, including media and content capture\, are planned in advance and need to be carried out as coordinated so we can use everyone’s time effectively. The end of each event is a great time for us to chat\, share ideas and discuss how things went.
