SUMMARY:Animal Justice Online Panel: A Bold Plan for Farmed Animal Protection in Canada
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW: https://action.animaljustice.ca/page/191364/petition/1 \nMost Canadians would be shocked to find out that there are effectively no laws to prevent the suffering of the hundreds of millions of animals on farms in this country. \nThat’s because the government has allowed the industry-dominated National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC) to call the shots. Instead of real laws\, NFACC sets weak\, voluntary guidelines with no meaningful oversight or transparency and little enforcement even when extreme abuse occurs. \nThe result is a system that’s fallen shockingly behind global welfare norms\, normalizing extreme confinement\, mutilations without pain relief\, and brutal on-farm killing. \nBut now a coalition of four leading animal protection organizations—Animal Justice\, Humane World for Animals\, Mercy For Animals\, and the Montreal SPCA—has developed a national plan that could transform Canada for farmed animals. \nIn this Animal Justice panel\, we’ll break down the new joint report Towards a National Framework for Farmed Animal Protection—and the roadmap it lays out for enforceable standards\, independent oversight\, and real accountability. \nOur panelists:\n-Dr. Tayler Zavitz: Advocacy Programs Specialist – Animal Justice\n-Riana Topan: Program Director\, Farmed Animal Welfare and Protection – Humane World for Animals Canada\n-Maha Bazzi: Director of Animal Welfare Initiatives – Mercy For Animals\n-Sayara Thurston: Senior Policy Advisor for Farmed Animals – Montreal SPCA\n-Alanna Devine: Director of Advocacy – Animal Justice\nHosted by: Animal Justice’s Kimberly Carroll \nWe’ll discuss:\n-How industry self-regulation became the default—and how badly it fails animals.\n-The concrete reforms proposed in the report\, and what it will take to turn them into law.\n-Establishing a federal Animal Welfare Act and a Ministry of Animal Welfare.\n-The outsized industry influence and institutional conflicts of interest that have kept meaningful protections stalled.\n-How you can help get this plan seen—and help build the public and political will to make it law. \nRegister now to secure your spot! https://action.animaljustice.ca/page/191364/petition/1

SUMMARY:Online Event: From Animal Farmers to Animal Advocates
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW: https://bit.ly/3Ovstjv \nPeople who make their living from animal agriculture are often the staunchest defenders of the industry—which is why it matters when a few of them change sides and start fighting for animals instead. \nThis Animal Justice panel brings together former animal farmers\, a slaughterhouse inspector\, and a ranch worker whose conscience and compassion led them from producing and killing animals to advocating for them. \nSome have gone on to open animal sanctuaries. Others have become vocal animal activists and vegan leaders. All of them offer something we don’t get often enough: firsthand accounts from inside animal agriculture—what they saw\, what they did\, and what sparked a change of heart that went against their livelihood\, culture\, and community. \nOur panelists:\n-Renée King-Sonnen: Former cattle rancher & Executive Director of Rowdy Girl Sanctuary\n-Mike Lanigan: Former cattle rancher & co-founder of Farmhouse Garden Animal Home\n-Jennifer Barrett: Former chicken farmer\n-David Magna: Former slaughterhouse inspector turned animal rights advocate\n-Edith Barabash: Former cattle ranch worker & Executive Director of Farmhouse Garden Animal Home \nHosted by: Animal Justice’s Kimberly Carroll \nIn this conversation\, panelists will share:\n-The animals and moments that changed them\n-Farming and slaughter practices that would shock most people\n-The beliefs that kept them in the industry—and what finally cracked their thinking open\n-How they transitioned out of animal agriculture and rebuilt their lives\n-What advocates should understand about the industry and the mindset of people inside it\n-What they’ve learned about effectively reaching non-vegans \nThis is an especially powerful panel to invite people who care about animals but haven’t connected the dots yet. And for advocates\, it’s a rare chance to hear directly from industry insiders—gather meaningful stories and insights for your own outreach and reignite your hope. \nBecause if people who once made their living from animal exploitation can change… anyone can. \nRegister now to secure your spot! https://bit.ly/3Ovstjv

SUMMARY:Mobilizing Against Live Exports: Part 2
DESCRIPTION:It’s working. \nThanks to supporters across Canada\, the movement to end live horse exports for slaughter is gaining real political traction and MPs are feeling it. \nHere’s what’s already been achieved together:\n-167 people have requested meetings with their MPs\n-42 meetings have been scheduled or have already taken place\n-41 paper petitions have been launched\n-MPs have told us this is now one of the top issues they’re hearing about from constituents\n-11 MPs have agreed to present petitions in the House of Commons calling for a ban via regulations\n-10 MPs have committed to raising the issue directly with the Prime Minister\, the Minister of Agriculture\, or in Parliament\n-On March 24\, Senator Adler raised a question of live horse exports in the Senate \nThis issue is moving through the political system in a way we haven’t seen before. \nBut we are not done yet. \nTo turn this momentum into a ban on this cruel practice\, we need to grow public pressure and keep increasing the number of Canadians engaging their MPs. \nHere’s How to Join Us: \n1. Email your MP’s constituency office to request a meeting to ask that they help ban live horse exports by raising the issue with the Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister\, requesting that they ban the practice by amending the Health of Animals Regulations. You can find your MP’s contact information HERE: https://www.ourcommons.ca/members/en\n2. Add your name to our tracking form HERE: https://docs.google.com/…/1FAIpQLSdb2bvsLBM…/viewform… \nEmail Script (Feel free to adapt in your own words): \n“Hello\, my name is [NAME]\, and I’m a constituent of [NAME OF MP]. I’m writing to request a meeting with [MP’S NAME] regarding live horse exports for slaughter. This is an important animal welfare issue to me\, and I would appreciate the opportunity to meet in person or by Zoom to discuss having [NAME OF MP] raise the issue with the Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister and request that they ban it by amending the Health of Animals Regulations. Could someone please get back to me about scheduling? Thank you.” \nYou can consult our Action Brief for further details.\nhttps://docs.google.com/…/1klJagihzoC5j4OgcBQOP…/edit… \nSo what are you waiting for? RSVP\, send your email and then update our tracking form! SUMMARY:Online Panel: What it Takes to End Live Horse Export
DESCRIPTION:Register Now: https://action.animaljustice.ca/page/186884/petition/1? \nHorses hold a special place in Canadian hearts. Yet every year in Canada\, thousands of gentle\, intelligent horses are crammed into wooden crates for long\, terrifying flights to Japan\, only to be slaughtered for sashimi—a delicacy for the wealthy. \nWe came close to banning this cruel practice last year. Then\, with an election and the new Mark Carney government\, the fight had to begin again. \nMomentum\, though\, is building: Various MPs in the House of Commons are working to keep this on the government’s agenda\, but we need more MPs to step up to push a ban across the finish line during this Parliament. \nOur February Animal Justice panel will bring together some of the top leaders in the fight for horses in Canada to share the path forward—and why your action is critical right now as we get closer to finally ending live horse export. \nOur panelists: \n-Jann Arden: Canadian singer/songwriter & head of the HORSESHIT campaign\n-Kaitlyn Mitchell: Director of Legal Advocacy at Animal Justice\n-Alexandra Mendès: Member of Parliament for Brossard – Saint-Lambert\n-Dr. Pamela Corey: Equine veterinarian\n-Sandy Sharkey: Equine photographer & advocate \nHosted by: Animal Justice’s Kimberly Carroll \nWe’ll cover: \n-The political pathway to getting a ban\n-What Animal Justice’s investigations reveal about transport deaths and suffering\n-How to meet with your MP and advocate effectively\n-Communicating about this issue in a compelling\, persuasive way \nIf you care about horses\, join us—and be part of the charge to shut down the live horse export industry for good.\nRegister now to secure your spot: https://action.animaljustice.ca/page/186884/petition/1? \nLet’s make this the moment we finally shut down the live horse export industry for good. 🐴 \n

SUMMARY:The Future of Marineland's Whales & Dolphins
DESCRIPTION:Register ➡️ https://bit.ly/3LbE3hP \nMarineland recently threatened to kill the 30 beluga whales in its care unless it receives government funding. This was after Ottawa rejected the park’s bid to export them to a subpar Chinese aquarium. \nSince then\, a lot of folks in the animal advocacy community have been unsure about what to do next to help the whales still suffering there. \nAt this Animal Justice event\, you’ll hear from the people working with government and other stakeholders on a concrete plan for the whales: \n• Charles Vinick and Dr. Lori Marino (Whale Sanctuary Project)\n• Camille Labchuk and Kaitlyn Mitchell (Animal Justice)\n• Melissa Matlow (World Animal Protection Canada\n• Dr. Naomi Rose (Animal Welfare Institute) \nThe event is hosted by Animal Justice’s Kimberly Carroll. \nWe’ll cover: \n• The Nova Scotia government approval clearing the way for the Whale Sanctuary Project and what’s next to get it operating\n• The research and site testing behind the seaside sanctuary plan\n• Viable options for whales and dolphins who can’t move to the sanctuary\n• What the federal and Ontario governments can do now—and where advocacy fits in\n• A first-hand account of the Chinese aquarium Marineland applied to send the whales to\n• What’s happening with the other animals at Marineland\nWe’ll also use this community gathering to take a high-impact action together.\nJoin us to help the animals trapped at Marineland get the care\, safety\, and future they need. \nSign up 👉 https://bit.ly/3LbE3hP

All levels of government are quiet\, yet they’re the ones who could bring together experts to decide and force the best solution for the belugas. The protest aims to highlight solutions while calling on Marineland to let them live.

SUMMARY:Court Hearing & Rally: Challenging Canada's Ban on International Dog Rescue
DESCRIPTION:Animal Justice & Soi Dog Canada will be in court to challenge Canada’s ban on international dog rescue on Wednesday\, October 8. In 2022\, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) banned dogs from over 100 countries from being brought into Canada for adoption or rescue. The ban was billed as temporary to protect against rabies\, but rabies is 100% vaccine-preventable\, and it has yet to be lifted. \nTragically\, international dog rescue charities were forced to stop their important work due to the ban. Canada was once a beacon of hope for dogs living on the streets and in shelters around the world—including in war-torn countries and in others where rescuers are saving animals from the meat trade. We can do better. \nJoin us in Ottawa for a peaceful rally calling on the government to:\n-End a blanket ban that does more harm than good\n-Give rescued dogs a second chance at life in Canada\n-Follow science-based\, modern veterinary guidelines \n🏛️ COURT SUPPORT – 9:30 AM\nThe legal challenge will begin inside the courthouse at 9:30 AM.\nSupporters are welcome and strongly encouraged to attend and show their support from inside the courtroom. Please be quiet and respectful. \n📢 RALLY – 1:00 to 1:30 PM\nMeet us outside the Ottawa Courthouse from 1:00 to 1:30 PM for a peaceful\, high-visibility rally.\n🐶 Bring your dogs! (Leashed\, friendly\, and comfortable in crowds)\n📣 Bring your voice—and we’ll provide the signs! \nTogether\, we’ll stand up for dogs and demand an end to the CFIA’s dog rescue ban. \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:National Day of Action to End Live Horse Exports
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, we rallied across Canada to ban the cruel export of horses for slaughter. Dozens of MPs were contacted by phone and email\, and many had meetings with constituents about the issue. 50+ advocates gathered in Edmonton to demand change! \n📞 On Oct 1\, we need you again. Call your MP & urge them to support a federal ban on live horse exports. If you’ve already taken this action\, please share any updates with us or call again if you haven’t yet had a meeting! \nEvery year\, thousands of gentle\, intelligent horses are forced into cramped wooden crates and flown halfway across the world from Canada to Japan. Terrified and confused\, they endure long\, grueling flights—only to be fattened and then slaughtered for raw horse meat (sashimi). \nThis fall\, the Liberal government will introduce a new budget bill\, which can include non-budgetary measures like a ban on live horse exports. This is a key moment to push for change! \nWe need you—your heart and voice—to end this cruel and completely unnecessary practice once and for all. \n1st LEVEL ACTION:\nPHONE your MP’s constituency office (find your MP and contact details here: https://www.ourcommons.ca/members/en?)\nYou’ll likely get their voicemail or a staff member. Tell them:\n● Your name\n● That you’re a constituent (NOT a member of Animal Justice)\n● You’re calling because you’d like to see if your MP will support passing a ban on live horse exports in the fall Parliamentary session.\n● If they’re a Liberal MP\, ask if they’d be willing to work to include the ban on live horse exports in the fall budget bill.\n● That’s all you need to say\, but if you’d like to say more\, we provide some additional talking points in this Action Brief \n2nd LEVEL ACTION:\nFor those who want to take one of the most powerful steps you can for the horses…\nWhen you phone\, ask for a MEETING with your MP or a member of their team about supporting a ban on live horse exports in advance of the fall budget bill.\nUse the Action Brief we created for you with step-by-step instructions on scheduling\, preparing for\, and navigating your meeting\nYou even have the option of having a member of the AJ team attend the meeting with you if you book it via Zoom!\n—–\nMake sure to mark GOING to let us know you made or are making that call on October 1st. And check back here on that date to get inspired by other AJAer’s experiences\, get moral support from the team\, and share your own experience of reaching out.\nTogether\, let’s make October 1st a turning point for horses in Canada.

SUMMARY:Vigil for the Animals Who Lost Their Lives to St. Joseph's Hospital
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a peaceful vigil to honor the lives of the dogs\, pigs and rodents who were subjected to painful outdated experiments conducted by St. Joseph’s Hospital. These innocent animals suffered and died and we will remember them and the lives they didn’t have the chance to live. \nWhat to Expect:\n🌸 A memorial space will be set up with a banner\, photos of some of the animals that have been killed\, and flowers.\n🕯️ We will stand in solidarity\, share words\, and reflect with a moment of silence.\n💌 You are invited to bring letters\, toys\, drawings\, or flowers to lay at the memorial. \nThis vigil is not just a moment of remembrance\, it’s a call for change. It’s time that the hospital stops forcing animals to endure highly invasive horrific experiments such as heart heart attacks lasting up to 3 hours\, and commit to replacing animal testing with modern\, ethical alternatives. \nAll are welcome. Let’s show St. Joseph’s Hospital that these animals’ lives mattered\, that it is time to halt the killing and release the dogs and pigs for rehoming. \nTo learn more about the experiences of the animals who lost their lives in secret experiments at St. Joseph’s Hospital\, watch our exposé: https://youtu.be/dJzpBk0ISpU

SUMMARY:RALLY: Animal Justice in Court to Block Return of Ag Gag Law
DESCRIPTION:Ontario’s dangerous ag gag law—which punishes whistleblowers and hides animal abuse— is back in court. After a judge struck down much of the law as unconstitutional last year\, the province filed an appeal in an attempt to overturn our hard-fought legal victory. Join Animal Justice and friends for a powerful rally outside the Ontario Court of Appeal as we return to the courtroom to defend the ruling. \nThe appeal will be heard by the Ontario Court of Appeal on Tuesday\, June 24 & Wednesday\, June 25. We need you there to show the court—and the public—that Canadians won’t accept laws that cover up cruelty and silence the truth about abuse at farms and slaughterhouses. Join us in an eye-catching rally\,  and help us spread the message that ag gag laws have NO place in Canada! \nSigns will be provided\, and you are welcome to bring your own. Bring your friends\, family\, and fellow advocates! \nNote: Please check the Faceboook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:Court Hearing: Vegan Human Rights Case
DESCRIPTION:Join Animal Justice inside the courthouse to watch this hearing live and support this important case for vegan rights! \nAnimal Justice has been granted leave to intervene at the Divisional Court of Ontario in a groundbreaking discrimination case brought by vegan firefighter\, Adam Knauff. This case raises the novel question of whether a belief in ethical veganism is a type of “creed”\, a protected ground under the Ontario Human Rights Code. \nIn 2023\, the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario denied Mr. Knauff’s claim that his belief system as an ethical vegan counted as a creed. Now\, Mr. Knauff seeks judicial review of that decision from the Court. An Animal Justice lawyer will argue that ethical veganism as a secular belief system meets all the requirements to be protected as a creed. \nLocation: Courtroom 3\, Osgoode Hall \nNote: Please check the Facebook event page for updates.

SUMMARY:Wayne Hsiung - The War on Compassion
DESCRIPTION:Hey Friends! I expect will be an excellent event coming up on THURSDAY eve that I’ll be hosting in the Animal Justice Academy community! \nWayne Hsiung is an open rescue crusader\, an animal rights lawyer who’s represented others (including HIMSELF) at trial\, a movement philosopher and strategist\, and someone who’s even done animal advocacy from jail! \nIn this AJA public online event\, we’ll talk to Wayne about his journey leading investigations and rescues in factory farms and slaughterhouses across the U.S. with Direct Action Everywhere\, serving as lead counsel for four “right to rescue” trials of activists being prosecuted\, and his own criminal prosecutions and time in jail. \nWe’ll discuss topics like: \n• the attempted silencing of animal advocacy and what we do to fight it\n• what Wayne feels are the top things we need to focus on in the animal rights movement right now\n• how protecting the most powerless in our society is the best way for us to protect democracy\n• the Simple Heart Initiative’s mission to build a mass movement for rescuing sick and dying animals in factory farms\n• current trials he’s been working on including the Ridglan Dog Trial and the King’s Sheep Trial with Animal Rising in the UK\n• how we\, as an individuals\, can help to build a world where compassion is celebrated instead of criminalized \nWe’ll also be opening things up for a community Q&A during the event. \nThursday\, Nov. 14\, 2024\n7-8:30pm EST on ZOOM\nREGISTER (free!) https://training.animaljusticeacademy.com/live-event-registration-11142024/ \nOur AJA events are always warm\, energetic gatherings where folks get to learn\, exchange ideas\, and feel in community. SUMMARY:Struck Down! Ontario’s Ag Gag law
DESCRIPTION:Animal Justice Academy is thrilled to invite you to our next AJA Lunchtime Live\, Struck Down! Ontario’s Ag-Gag Law Defeat Unpacked\, this Thursday\, April 18th\, at Noon – 1pm on ZOOM. \nAcross Canada\, provincial ag-gag laws have made it illegal for animal activists and journalists to go undercover to expose the horrific cruelty that exists on meat\, dairy\, egg\, and fur farms and slaughterhouses. \nOn April 2nd\, Animal Justice lawyers struck down major provisions of Ontario’s ag-gag law\, Bill – 156\, in Ontario’s Superior Court\, charging that the law unconstitutionally violated Canadians’ freedom of expression. \nThis is the first time in Canadian history that lawyers have successfully defeated ag-gag legislation in court\, making it a landmark VICTORY for animals! \nJoin us this Thursday\, April 18th\, as lawyer and executive director of Animal Justice\, Camille Labchuk and animal rights journalist\, Jessica Scott Reid break down the court ruling and discuss what it means for Canadian ag-gag laws in the future. They’ll also discuss what whistleblowers and journalists can expect going forward as they expose cruelty at Ontario’s animal farms and slaughterhouses. \nRegister (free!): https://training.animaljusticeacademy.com/lunchtime-live-registration-04182024 \nThursday\, April 18th\nNoon – 1pm ET on ZOOM

SUMMARY:Hilton Toronto Protest: Progress in Cage-free Commitment
DESCRIPTION:Let’s ask Hilton to report their cage-free progress! \nHilton has announced a policy to stop using eggs from hens confined in cruel cages. However\, they are not reporting global progress on this commitment. \nAs part of a Global Campaign from the Open Wing Alliance\, we will gather outside Hilton Toronto to protest their lack of transparency. \nWe’ll bring a few posters to share. Feel free to bring yours\, too! \n**If it is supposed to rain during the planned date and time\, the event will take place on Sunday instead. We’ll share an update if that’s the case!** \nLearn more: \nAnimal Justice is a member of the Open Wing Alliance (OWA)— a global coalition of organizations focused on ending the abuse of hens worldwide. \nOn February 13th\, OWA released Fair and Foul\, Global Travel Edition\, a report that exposes global hospitality and travel companies that are not reporting globally on their global cage-free commitments. OWA is now asking four (4) of those companies – Hilton\, Meliá Hotels International\, and Louvre Hotels Group – to keep their promises and publicly report on their global progress. \nBy providing detailed reporting on their progress\, these companies will catch up with major global hospitality groups like Aman Resorts\, StarHotels Choice Hotels\, IHG\, Dorchester Collection and Motel One which are already reporting on their commitment to end cruel cages in their global supply chains. \n

SUMMARY:PUBLIC AWARENESS BANNER DROP FOR THE GOVERNMENT'S MURDER OF MALLY'S RACCOONS
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be setting up at the busiest intersection in Peterborough using banners\, protest signs\, literature handouts\, and public outreach (all will be provided by organizers) to share our outrage and disgust over the abuse and murder of Mally’s 87 raccoons at the hands of the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNRF)\, as well as the decades of MNRF over-reach and tyrannical authoritarian-style regulation of Ontario’s Wildlife Rehabbers. \nWe’ll be meeting at the corner that McDonalds is on. \nThere are a lot of fast-food restaurants and plazas with parking lots nearby that you can park in if you’re comfortable with that. \n
