SUMMARY:National Day of Action to End Live Horse Exports
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, we rallied across Canada to ban the cruel export of horses for slaughter. Dozens of MPs were contacted by phone and email\, and many had meetings with constituents about the issue. 50+ advocates gathered in Edmonton to demand change! \n📞 On Oct 1\, we need you again. Call your MP & urge them to support a federal ban on live horse exports. If you’ve already taken this action\, please share any updates with us or call again if you haven’t yet had a meeting! \nEvery year\, thousands of gentle\, intelligent horses are forced into cramped wooden crates and flown halfway across the world from Canada to Japan. Terrified and confused\, they endure long\, grueling flights—only to be fattened and then slaughtered for raw horse meat (sashimi). \nThis fall\, the Liberal government will introduce a new budget bill\, which can include non-budgetary measures like a ban on live horse exports. This is a key moment to push for change! \nWe need you—your heart and voice—to end this cruel and completely unnecessary practice once and for all. \n1st LEVEL ACTION:\nPHONE your MP’s constituency office (find your MP and contact details here: https://www.ourcommons.ca/members/en?)\nYou’ll likely get their voicemail or a staff member. Tell them:\n● Your name\n● That you’re a constituent (NOT a member of Animal Justice)\n● You’re calling because you’d like to see if your MP will support passing a ban on live horse exports in the fall Parliamentary session.\n● If they’re a Liberal MP\, ask if they’d be willing to work to include the ban on live horse exports in the fall budget bill.\n● That’s all you need to say\, but if you’d like to say more\, we provide some additional talking points in this Action Brief \n2nd LEVEL ACTION:\nFor those who want to take one of the most powerful steps you can for the horses…\nWhen you phone\, ask for a MEETING with your MP or a member of their team about supporting a ban on live horse exports in advance of the fall budget bill.\nUse the Action Brief we created for you with step-by-step instructions on scheduling\, preparing for\, and navigating your meeting\nYou even have the option of having a member of the AJ team attend the meeting with you if you book it via Zoom!\n—–\nMake sure to mark GOING to let us know you made or are making that call on October 1st. And check back here on that date to get inspired by other AJAer’s experiences\, get moral support from the team\, and share your own experience of reaching out.\nTogether\, let’s make October 1st a turning point for horses in Canada.
