Transitioning for “a better future for farmers, consumers, animals, and the planet”.
Increasing climate events, declining incomes, growing demand for plant-based food are some of the challenges being faced by today’s farmers. Farmers are struggling especially under the growing climate events wreaking havoc. Join our panel of experts as they discuss strategies to transition farmers from an animal-based model to more sustainable, environmentally and animal friendly opportunities.
Katherine Jernigan is the Farmer Outreach manager for Transfarmation, a project by Mercy For Animals that works with industrial animal farmers to transition their farms to plant-focused operations. Katherine has a background in food systems and sustainable agriculture and has grown food and worked with farmers for more than ten years. She has served as an agricultural educator in both urban and rural environments. Katherine is a relationship builder and collaborator focused on bringing people with diverse backgrounds and specialties together to achieve common goals. She works with Transfarmation, farmers to develop and execute their plans for farm transitions and ensures they have the tools and support to be successful.
Rebecca Knowles is the founding director of Stockfree Farming, a Scottish-based charity which assists and supports farmers and crofters in the transition away from livestock agriculture into fairer, greener livelihoods that reduce sector emissions, optimise land use, support nature recovery, augment food security, and reinvigorate rural economies.
Tati von Rheinbaben is the co-founder of the newly formed Farm Transition Academy a platform and service to promote farm transitions. For her main job, she is the project manager at the animal rights organization Surge. She also worked one year at Refarm’d and is now actively involved with the German farm transition group BeVeLa (= Begleitung zur Veganen Landwirtschaft, in English: Accompaniment to Vegan Agriculture). She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular Biology and a Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering and Science.
